Student Grants

Term-Time Travel Grants

Applications are accepted through CARAT.

Detailed Description

Term-Time Travel Grants are travel funds for graduate students whose primary academic domains are related to China to travel during the spring semester (not for summer/winter travel). The proposed travel can be to Greater China or to any US or international destination necessary for advancing the research project.

Note: Students intending to travel to Taiwan for research should apply for a Taiwan Study Grant.

The Harvard China Fund and the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies invite proposals from graduate students to travel for semester-time research during spring 2024. All Harvard graduate students whose primary research domain is related to China Studies are welcome to apply. Please note that all awardees must adhere to the University’s current COVID-19 travel requirements before, during, and after travel, as well as any applicable School or Unit policies.

For assistance in planning your trip, you should consult with Harvard Global Support Services for the most updated information. The Harvard China Fund and Fairbank Center cannot help you obtain the appropriate visa, health documentation and/or airline tickets.

Required materials include:

  • A current CV or resume
  • A detailed research proposal (approximately 750 words and no more than 3 pages double-spaced) that explains your research, planned methodology and timeline
  • A comprehensive travel itinerary including proposed dates and locations
  • A detailed itemized budget of projected expenses
  • A letter of recommendation from your academic advisor confirming the feasibility of your research and travel plans

Application deadline: December 5, 2023, for travel during the spring 2024 semester
