In 2018, after the end of the Chinese Language and Culture Program and during an interim period as we worked on developing other students programs, the Harvard China Fund offered language funding for undergraduates and graduate students at any of Harvard’s schools who were beginning Chinese language learners with minimal experience in China. We awarded twelve grants for winter and summer to nine undergraduates and three graduate students totaling $65.5K that were applied to accredited language programs recommended by the Chinese Language Program. The grant recipients also participated in a travel essay contest, held in conjunction with the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies, and our winners, Paloma O’Connor, 2018 Summer Grant Essay and Jonah Lefkoe, 2018 Harvard China Fund Summer Grant Reflection, shared their rich experiences studying Chinese and living in Beijing.
